Nifty gained 453 points. Sensex added nearly 1,336 points. Pharmaceutical stocks surged more than 7%. And after weeks of uncertainty, Dalal Street finally reclaimed the psychologically important 23,000 mark.

On the surface, it was a convincing recovery.

But Friday revealed something investors should not ignore.

While Nifty and Sensex ended higher, the Nifty Smallcap 100 declined 1.85% and the Nifty Midcap 100 lost 0.93%. Declining stocks substantially outnumbered advancing stocks on the NSE.

Meanwhile, crude oil remained above $100 per barrel, geopolitical tensions continued, and global investors prepared for the November 3 US midterm elections.

The question facing Dalal Street is simple: Has the market begun a sustainable recovery, or is this another rally that could struggle when global risks intensify?

In this edition of The Week That Was, Riddhi Siddhi Share Brokers examines the market’s five-day journey, sector performance, corporate earnings, institutional activity and the developments that could influence trading during November 2–6, 2026.

1. Indian Stock Market Weekly Performance: October 26–30, 2026

Indian benchmark indices finished the week with solid gains.

IndexOctober 30 CloseWeekly Change
Nifty 5023,053.10+2.00%
BSE Sensex74,459.53+1.83%
Bank Nifty54,686.95Approximately +0.74%
Nifty 50021,895.90+2.19%
Nifty Midcap 15021,047.50+2.21%
Nifty Smallcap 25016,764.55+2.32%

The Nifty 50 advanced 453.10 points from its previous weekly close of 22,600.

The Sensex gained 1,335.70 points during the same period.

Broader-market indices also recorded positive weekly returns, although their performance differed significantly across index categories.

The important distinction: A positive weekly return does not mean buying remained strong throughout the week.

Friday’s selling in smaller companies showed that investor confidence was still selective.

October’s Bigger Picture

Despite the late-month recovery, Indian equities had faced considerable volatility throughout October.

Foreign selling, elevated energy prices, geopolitical uncertainty and changing global interest-rate expectations remained important influences.

At the same time, selected corporate earnings and renewed buying in large-cap companies helped stabilise sentiment.

The week’s recovery therefore needs to be viewed against the broader market correction rather than in isolation.

2. Dalal Street’s Five-Day Journey: How Nifty Reclaimed 23,000

Trading DayNifty CloseDaily Movement
Monday, October 2622,753+153 points
Tuesday, October 2722,750−3 points
Wednesday, October 2822,699−51 points
Thursday, October 2922,937+238 points
Friday, October 3023,053+116 points

Daily figures are rounded.

Monday: Buyers Return After the Previous Week’s Weakness

Nifty recovered approximately 153 points to close near 22,753.

Selective buying returned as investors assessed corporate earnings and the possibility that recent market weakness had created opportunities in fundamentally stronger companies.

However, elevated crude oil prices continued to limit confidence.

Tuesday: Recovery Loses Momentum

Nifty finished almost unchanged near 22,750.

The absence of strong follow-through suggested that market participants were still cautious.

Investors were also awaiting the Federal Reserve’s policy announcement and further corporate earnings.

Wednesday: Global Risks Interrupt the Recovery

Nifty declined approximately 51 points to 22,699.

Geopolitical developments and high energy prices continued to influence sentiment.

The decline highlighted the market’s vulnerability to external developments despite improving domestic earnings expectations.

Thursday: Bulls Stage a Powerful Comeback

Nifty gained approximately 238 points to finish near 22,937.

Buying interest strengthened, bringing the 23,000 level back into focus.

The recovery was particularly important because it followed two sessions in which momentum had weakened.

Friday: Nifty Crosses 23,000, but Market Breadth Deteriorates

Nifty added another 116 points to close at 23,053.10.

Sensex gained 308.49 points to settle at 74,459.53.

The Nifty IT index advanced more than 2%, while pharmaceutical and healthcare shares also contributed positively.

However, the broader market told a different story.

The Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 1.85%, while the Nifty Midcap 100 declined 0.93%.

On the NSE, declining stocks substantially outnumbered advancing stocks.

Riddhi Siddhi Share Brokers’ observation: The benchmark recovery was encouraging, but Friday’s weaker market breadth means investors should wait for broader confirmation before assuming the correction has ended.

3. What Really Drove the Market Recovery?

Corporate Earnings Helped Restore Confidence

Corporate earnings remained one of the important domestic influences.

Results and management commentary from major companies, including Trent, Kotak Mahindra Bank and businesses across banking, pharmaceuticals and infrastructure, attracted investor attention.

However, earnings reactions were not uniform.

Some stocks gained despite mixed financial results, while others faced selling even when reported numbers appeared respectable.

This demonstrates an important principle.

Stock prices respond not only to earnings growth, but also to expectations, valuations, future guidance and changes in investor confidence.

For investors evaluating quarterly results, revenue growth, operating margins, cash generation, debt levels and management commentary often provide more useful information than headline profit growth alone.

Institutional Flows: Signs of Improvement, but Not Yet a Trend Reversal

Foreign institutional buying improved during selected sessions.

Friday’s reported FII net cash purchases were approximately ₹3,599 crore, while domestic institutional investors were net sellers of approximately ₹818 crore.

This was an encouraging change from the sustained foreign selling seen earlier in October.

However, the broader monthly picture remained substantially weaker.

A few sessions of foreign buying cannot establish that international investors have permanently reversed their position on Indian equities.

Investors should monitor whether positive flows continue and whether domestic institutions maintain support during periods of renewed volatility.

IT Stocks Provide Important Support

Information technology shares were among Friday’s stronger performers.

The Nifty IT index gained more than 2% during the session.

The sector also benefited from a notable improvement in sentiment during October, although global technology valuations and concerns about artificial intelligence spending remained important variables.

For Indian IT companies, investors will continue monitoring demand from overseas clients, deal pipelines, operating margins, currency movements and management guidance.

4. Sector Performance: Pharma Leads, Oil & Gas Lags

The week’s sectoral performance showed a combination of defensive buying and selective participation in economically sensitive industries.

Sector IndexWeekly Performance
Nifty Pharma+7.09%
Nifty Healthcare+6.91%
Nifty Media+4.34%
Nifty Capital Markets+4.01%
Nifty Realty+3.77%
Nifty Infrastructure+2.86%
Nifty Metal+2.67%
Nifty Auto+2.25%
Nifty FMCG+2.18%
Nifty IT+1.91%
Nifty Private Bank+1.49%
Nifty Energy+1.27%
Nifty Bank+0.74%
Nifty Oil & Gas−0.74%

Why Pharma Outperformed

Pharmaceutical shares benefited from a combination of company-specific developments, earnings expectations and investor interest in relatively defensive businesses.

The sector’s approximately 7.09% weekly advance was one of the strongest performances among major sector indices.

However, a sharp sector rally does not mean every pharmaceutical company offers the same investment characteristics.

Export exposure, regulatory developments, product portfolios, valuations and profitability differ significantly across companies.

Why Oil & Gas Underperformed

The Nifty Oil & Gas index declined approximately 0.74% during the week.

Elevated crude prices create different outcomes for different companies.

Upstream producers may benefit from stronger realisations, while refiners, marketing companies and energy-intensive businesses can face margin pressure depending on their cost structures and pricing arrangements.

This explains why investors should not treat all energy-related businesses as interchangeable.

5. Stocks in the Spotlight: Winners, Losers and Earnings Reactions

Individual stock movements reflected a combination of earnings announcements, sector rotation and changing market expectations.

Notable Weekly Gainers

Among the prominent names attracting buying interest were:

  • Trent: Strong investor interest following corporate developments and earnings.
  • Dr Reddy’s Laboratories: Significant share-price strength despite pressure on some reported earnings measures.
  • Apollo Hospitals: Positive momentum amid broader healthcare-sector outperformance.
  • Adani Ports: Strong weekly participation.
  • Kotak Mahindra Bank: Buying interest supported by earnings-related developments.

Stocks Facing Pressure

Several prominent companies experienced relative weakness, including:

  • Shriram Finance
  • Coal India
  • Reliance Industries
  • Tata Consultancy Services
  • ONGC

These movements should not automatically be interpreted as judgments about the long-term quality of the underlying businesses.

A stock can decline because expectations were too optimistic, valuations were elevated, or investors preferred other sectors.

Equally, a rising share price does not guarantee that a company’s fundamentals have improved proportionately.

Investor takeaway: Weekly stock performance is a starting point for research, not a substitute for it.

6. Crude Oil Above $100: Why India Cannot Ignore the Risk

Crude oil remained one of the most important global market variables.

WTI crude traded above $100 per barrel, while Brent prices remained significantly higher amid concerns about Middle Eastern supply disruptions.

For India, a major importer of crude oil, sustained high energy prices can create several challenges.

Higher Import Costs

An increase in crude prices can raise India’s import bill, potentially widening the trade deficit if other conditions remain unchanged.

Inflationary Pressure

Higher energy costs may influence transportation, logistics, industrial production and eventually consumer prices.

The extent of the impact depends on domestic fuel pricing, taxation and the ability of businesses to absorb higher costs.

Corporate Margin Pressure

Industries such as aviation, chemicals, paints, logistics and selected manufacturing businesses may face higher input costs.

However, the effect varies across companies depending on their ability to pass costs to customers.

Currency and Capital Flows

Higher oil import costs can increase demand for foreign currency.

Combined with foreign portfolio outflows, this may contribute to pressure on the rupee.

The larger concern is not one day’s crude price. It is how long elevated prices persist and whether businesses can protect their profitability.

7. Nifty Technical Outlook: 23,500 or 22,500 — Which Comes First?

Nifty finished the week at 23,053.10.

The recovery above 23,000 improved near-term sentiment, but the index still faces important resistance levels.

Technical analysts have identified the 23,200–23,250 region as an important near-term hurdle.

A sustained move beyond this zone, accompanied by stronger market breadth, would provide more convincing evidence of improving momentum.

Important Nifty Levels

LevelSignificance
23,500Higher upside reference
23,200–23,250Near-term resistance zone
23,000Psychological reference
22,800Initial support reference
22,600–22,700Lower support area
22,500Further downside reference

These are indicative analytical zones drawn from current market commentary and recent price action, not guaranteed outcomes.

Bullish Scenario

A sustained move above 23,200–23,250, supported by improving breadth and institutional participation, could strengthen the case for further recovery.

The 23,500 region would then become an important higher reference.

Bearish Scenario

Failure to sustain above 23,000, followed by weakness below 22,800, could bring the 22,600–22,700 region back into focus.

A deeper correction could increase attention on 22,500.

What Would Confirm a Stronger Recovery?

Riddhi Siddhi Share Brokers believes investors should observe several factors together:

  • Sustained strength in Nifty rather than brief intraday spikes.
  • Improving participation among midcap and smallcap stocks.
  • More consistent institutional buying.
  • Stabilisation in crude oil and global bond yields.
  • Corporate earnings supporting current valuations.

For context, readers can revisit our earlier analysis, Nifty Below 23,000: What Should Investors and Traders Do Now?, which examined the market’s earlier breakdown and why technical levels must be reassessed as prices change.

The critical lesson: A recovery becomes more credible when price, participation and fundamentals improve together.

8. What Changed From Last Week’s Market Expectations?

Before the trading week began, Riddhi Siddhi Share Brokers had highlighted several risks in our Nifty Week Ahead analysis for October 26–30, 2026.

The major concerns included:

  • Elevated crude oil prices.
  • Federal Reserve monetary policy.
  • September-quarter corporate earnings.
  • Geopolitical developments.
  • Foreign institutional selling.
  • Important Nifty support and resistance levels.

The market subsequently recovered despite several of these concerns remaining unresolved.

This is an important distinction.

Markets do not always wait for economic uncertainty to disappear before recovering.

Sometimes prices improve because expectations become less pessimistic, earnings prove more resilient than feared, or investors return to selected companies.

However, a recovery driven by improving sentiment can still be vulnerable if the underlying risks intensify.

For investors, the important question is whether the recovery is supported by sustainable improvements rather than temporary relief.

9. Global Markets: Why Domestic Strength Did Not Mean Global Stability

Global equity markets remained sensitive to interest-rate expectations, geopolitical developments, corporate earnings and energy prices.

Technology-sector volatility also influenced international investor sentiment.

For Indian equities, three global transmission channels deserve particular attention.

US Bond Yields

Higher US Treasury yields can make dollar-denominated fixed-income assets relatively more attractive and influence global equity valuations.

The US Dollar

Currency movements affect foreign portfolio investment, import costs and earnings translation for internationally exposed companies.

Global Risk Appetite

When investors reduce exposure to riskier assets, emerging markets can experience capital outflows even when domestic fundamentals remain comparatively stable.

This is why a strong domestic trading session should not be mistaken for immunity from global market developments.

10. The Week Ahead: November 2–6, 2026

The first trading week of November brings an important combination of political events, economic releases, corporate earnings and geopolitical uncertainty.

US Midterm Elections — November 3

The United States holds its midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 Senate contests, including two special elections, are on the ballot.

The outcome will help determine the balance of power in Congress.

Potential implications include expectations around government spending, taxation, trade policy and the legislative priorities of the Trump administration.

However, the election result alone will not determine stock-market direction.

Investors should focus on subsequent policy developments and their economic consequences.

US Economic Data

Important releases expected during the week include:

DateEvent
November 2ISM Manufacturing PMI
November 3US midterm elections and JOLTS job openings
November 4ISM Services PMI
November 6US monthly employment report

Economic release schedules may be revised.

These indicators can influence expectations about Federal Reserve policy, US Treasury yields and global capital flows.

Indian Corporate Earnings

India’s September-quarter earnings season will remain an important domestic influence.

Investors should monitor scheduled announcements and exchange filings from major companies across banking, consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, telecommunications and manufacturing.

Particular attention should be paid to:

  • Revenue and volume growth.
  • Operating margins.
  • Input-cost pressures.
  • Demand outlook.
  • Management guidance.
  • Capital expenditure and debt.
  • Cash-flow generation.

Company-specific results schedules should always be checked against the latest NSE/BSE corporate announcements because dates can change.

Crude Oil and Geopolitics

Developments involving the Middle East and Ukraine will remain relevant for energy prices and international investor sentiment.

Any major supply disruption or diplomatic breakthrough could quickly change market expectations.

Institutional Investment

Foreign and domestic institutional flows will remain important indicators of market participation.

A continuation of foreign buying would be encouraging, but the quality and breadth of that buying matter as much as the headline figure.

11. Five Things Investors Should Learn From This Week

1. A Strong Nifty Does Not Mean Every Stock Is Strong

Friday’s session demonstrated that benchmark indices can rise while a large number of individual stocks decline.

Market breadth therefore deserves attention alongside headline index movements.

2. Weekly Performance Can Hide Daily Weakness

Smallcap and midcap indices finished the week higher, but experienced substantial selling on Friday.

Looking only at weekly returns can conceal important changes in momentum.

3. Earnings Quality Matters More Than Headlines

Revenue growth, profit margins, cash generation and management guidance should be evaluated together.

A single impressive profit-growth figure rarely tells the complete story.

4. Global Events Affect Indian Investors

Crude oil, interest rates, currencies and geopolitical developments can influence Indian equities even when domestic business conditions remain resilient.

5. Risk Management Must Come Before Market Predictions

No technical level, market forecast or investment thesis is guaranteed.

Investors should evaluate suitability, diversification, leverage, liquidity and their ability to withstand losses.

12. Frequently Asked Questions

How much did Nifty gain during October 26–30, 2026?

Nifty gained 453.10 points, or approximately 2.00%, to close at 23,053.10 on Friday, October 30.

Why did Nifty rise while smallcap stocks fell on Friday?

Large-cap stocks, particularly in IT and selected defensive sectors, supported the benchmark indices. At the same time, selling pressure affected smaller companies, resulting in weaker market breadth.

Which sector performed best during the week?

Nifty Pharma was among the strongest major sector indices, gaining approximately 7.09%.

Is Nifty 23,500 the next confirmed target?

No. The 23,500 level is a possible higher technical reference, not a confirmed outcome. Sustained strength above nearer resistance and improving market participation would be important before considering a stronger recovery scenario.

Why are crude oil prices important for the Indian stock market?

India imports a substantial share of its crude oil requirements. Higher prices can affect import costs, inflation, corporate margins, currency movements and economic expectations.

When are the US midterm elections?

The US midterm elections are scheduled for November 3, 2026.

What should investors monitor during November 2–6?

Important developments include US elections, employment data, ISM economic indicators, Indian corporate earnings, crude oil prices and institutional investment flows.

13. Riddhi Siddhi Share Brokers’ Gyan Mantra

A market recovery is encouraging. A confirmed recovery requires evidence.

Nifty’s return above 23,000 has improved sentiment.

But investors should remember that market reversals rarely move in a straight line.

Sharp rallies, temporary corrections, sector rotation and changing global expectations can all occur during the same recovery phase.

Rather than trying to predict every market movement, investors should focus on understanding what is changing and whether their financial decisions remain appropriate for their objectives.

The objective is not to participate in every rally. It is to make informed decisions while understanding the risks involved.

14. The Week That Was: Final Verdict

October 26–30 delivered an important recovery for Indian equities.

Nifty gained 2%, Sensex advanced 1.83%, and pharmaceutical stocks emerged as a major source of strength.

Yet Friday’s deterioration in broader-market participation demonstrated that the recovery was not uniform.

Looking ahead, the market faces a significant combination of US elections, economic data, corporate earnings and elevated energy prices.

The 23,200–23,250 region remains an important near-term upside test for Nifty, while 22,800 and the 22,600–22,700 area provide lower technical reference zones.

For Riddhi Siddhi Share Brokers, the central takeaway is that improving sentiment should be evaluated alongside market breadth, earnings quality and global risk.

The bulls have reclaimed 23,000. Now they must demonstrate that the recovery has staying power.
